Like books stacked on a library shelf, these tomes have many stories to tell about the geological past. At Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, you’ll find the minerals seeping from the sandstone cliffs in colorful marks which vary by their properties. The banding and streaks are created by iron (red), manganese (black-white), limonite (yellow-brown) and copper (pink-green) which leaches out by way of groundwater.
