That which makes the Great Lakes “great” is less their size, but rather the mystery, wonder, and power they emanate. These lakes have plenty of stories telling about their fury and tranquility. On pleasant days they can be calm and still as a nearly endless sheet of glass. Other days, unusual weather patterns can bring heavy storms with treacherous waves that can handily capsize large vessels. Winter’s squalls and bitter polar air can freeze the surface into thick ice that can hold for months at a time.
