While the Mojave desert can be a brutal environment from it’s scorching summer heat, not too long ago a source of heat came from beneath the ground. The Cima Volcanic Field stretches over 58 square miles and contains 40 cinder cone vents with black basaltic lava flows charring the tan desert landscape. As the lava cooled at the surface, the liquid lava would continue to flow underneath, producing a tunnel. Now that the eruption has ended, these lava tubes provide a unique look at this geological process.
